Description
Hyssop Herb is a plant, known as “Sacred Herb,” that has been used since biblical times for its cleansing and protective qualities. This sacred herb has been used for centuries in spiritual practices to remove negativity, purify the body and spirit, and restore inner balance. Carefully dried and prepared, Hyssop is ideal for use in: Spiritual Baths, floor washes, incense blends, and other ritual work where deep cleansing is required. According to the Old Testament of the Bible, Hyssop Herb was known for its purification of the soul as well as its decontamination abilities against: the plague, leprosy, and ailments of the chest.
In Hoodoo, Hyssop holds a special place as one of the most important herbs for spiritual purification and forgiveness. It is most commonly used after situations involving moral burden, spiritual contamination, or negative influences. Practitioners often prepare a Hyssop bath by steeping the herb in hot water, allowing it to cool, and then pouring the infusion over the body while praying for cleansing and renewal. This act is believed to wash away: spiritual residue, guilt, and harmful energy while leaving the individual refreshed and spiritually restored. Hyssop can also be used to cleanse a home by adding it to floor washes or sprinkling it in ritual spaces for ongoing protection.
The Use of Hyssop Herb in the Bible
It is evident that King David regularly cleansed with Hyssop and recognized its spiritual significance especially after he sinned with Bathsheba. In Psalm 51:7-10, David wrote “Purge me with hyssop and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.” This verse is frequently recited during Hyssop spiritual baths in Hoodoo, reinforcing the intention of repentance, forgiveness, and spiritual renewal. Another significant reference appears during the Jewish Passover in the Book of Exodus, where hyssop was used to apply sacrificial blood to doorposts for protection, symbolizing its role as a spiritual safeguard against harm. In Exodus 12:22-23 , the Children of Israel were instructed to dip hyssop herb in blood and then strike the lintel and doorposts of their homes. As a result, all of the firstborn sons of Egypt perished when the Lord came while those who followed his command survived. Hyssop is typically used for cleansing by many occultists to purify their bodies and other sacred spaces before and after rituals. Many Hoodoo practitioners will also pray over then sprinkle Hyssop herb in the four corners of their home in order to fortify it from evil.
