Lucky Horseshoe

For several generations, lucky horseshoes have been seen nailed upright above the front doors of many African American households across the south as an amulet for good luck and protection. Horseshoes are supposed to be placed in an upright position over the front door of a home to not only attract good fortune but also to : keep evil away, ward off sudden death, and to keep unnatural illnesses from occuring. The Lucky Horseshoe is supposed to be placed in an upright position instead of downward because it is believed that it will retain all the financial benefits that are coming in instead of waisting them.

Southern folklore surrounding the initial use of the Lucky Horseshoe as an amulet in Hoodoo for warding off evil begins with a blacksmith named John who made horseshoes. These horseshoes that John made were extraordinary because it was said that it made the horses run very fast and for longer distances than other horses. The Devil himself heard about John and figured that if he could wear a pair of John’s famous horseshoes then he could accomplish more. One night just past midnight, John heard three loud knocks at the door and when John opened the door it was Satan standing a staggering seven feet tall.

The Devil let himself into John’s home and demanded that John make him a pair of his infamous Lucky Horseshoes so that he could move even further and faster than anything else in the universe in order to accomplish his deeds. John contemplated accepting the offer because he knew that humanity would be at risk if he obliged. John also knew that the Devil had the power to annihilate him if he declined. John eventually decided to make the horseshoes for the Devil and began to make them that night.

When the horseshoes were finished, John notified the Devil that they were ready for him. John made a calculating decision to make the horseshoes four sizes smaller. After John nailed the horseshoes to the Devil’s feet and he hopped up the Devil screamed in agony because they were so painful. The Devil couldn’t remove them himself because John knew how to hammer a nail into a hoof so that it wouldn’t come off. The Devil began to beg John to remove them and John told the Devil that he would remove the horseshoes under certain conditions. John told him to never return to his house again and that when he saw a horseshoe nailed above a door that he wouldn’t trouble that household as a reminder of this particular monemt. The Devil agreed so John removed the horseshoes from his feet and he vanished into the night to never be seen again.

Legend says that John told his family members about his encounter with the Devil that night and sent them horseshoes to nail above their front doors. Every time that the Devil decided that he would plague John’s family with different misfortunes such as : death, illness, heartache, and financial problems when he saw that horseshoe he would flee. Word eventually spread like wildfire and this is why to this day you are likely to see a Lucky Horseshoe above the front door of many Southern black households.
