Spiritual Significance of Red Palm Oil
Epo pupa represents life, blood, warmth, vitality, and divine nourishment. Its rich red-orange color symbolizes the animating force of creation and the power that flows between humans, nature, and the Orishas. Red palm oil is believed to awaken spiritual forces, feed the Orishas, and seal sacred work so that ashé remains active and effective.

• Ogun – red palm oil is applied to his iron tools and shrine items to strengthen his force, feed his warrior energy, and maintain protection.
• Ochosi – used alongside Ogun to support justice, accuracy, and focused spiritual work.
• Shango – epo pupa represents fire, passion, and authority, aligning with Shango’s commanding energy.
• Orisha Oko – deeply connected to agriculture and the earth, red palm oil feeds his grounding and fertility aspects.

Not all Orishas receive red palm oil. Some, such as Obatalá, are traditionally offered white substances only. Correct use depends on lineage, house rules, and divination.

Red Palm Oil is often used to activate ritual items, including: stones, tools, and charms. When applied, it is believed to “open” the spiritual current and allow ashé to move freely. In ceremonies, it may be rubbed onto objects while prayers, songs, or invocations are spoken, sealing the work with divine authority.
